The Legend of Saint Valentine
The life of Saint Valentine is where the long line of Valentine’s Day begins. There are many different legends of just exactly who he was. There are many variations of the story through the years as well. The most popular story is that Saint Valentine was a priest serving during the third century in Rome. During this time the Emperor, Claudius II, decided single men were better soldiers than those with wives and families. Therefore, he outlawed marriage of young men during time of war.
Saint Valentine felt this to be an absolute injustice and took matters into his own hands. He decided he would continue to perform marriages in secret for young lovers. When Claudius discovered that Saint Valentine was not following his decree, he put him in prison and gave him the death penalty. Another part of this legend is that while in prison, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. She visited often during Saint Valentines time of confinement. When his day to be put to death came, he confessed his love to her before he died. It is said that he wrote her a letter with the words “From your Valentine”. The belief is that this is how the expression of being someone’s “Valentine” came about. Although the life of Saint Valentine is surrounded by mystery the one thing that stays constant through the legend is that he was sympathetic and heroic to those who were in love.
The Evolution of Valentines Day
Following Saint Valentine’s death, they wanted to honor his life and what he sacrificed to help people be with who they love. In the fifth century Pope Gelasius declared February 14th Saint Valentine’s Day. They celebrated this day originally by having a big feast with friends and family. It was not until the middle ages that the day become more associated with love and romance. The traditional celebration during that time was the man would write a love note or poem to the woman he loved. In return she would cook him a nice meal to share together. Each year as the holiday came and went more tokens were exchanged by loved ones. For example, candies and flowers. By 1900, printed pre-made cards started to become more popular than hand written notes. People enjoyed the efficiency and cute graphics that came along with the progression of printed cards.
Today an estimated 145 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged each year in America. This makes it is the second largest card sending holiday right behind Christmas. As the years went on, the holiday also started to expand across the world from Rome. Now it is celebrated in America, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia. Each culture has a slight variation on how the spend the holiday. Although is has evolved throughout the years, it is a day to dedicate time and exchange tokens of love with those close to you,
